Canton Tower, Guangzhou

This lighting design was a true collaboration. After a concept lighting design by Rogier van der Heide when he was Global Leader at Arup, the local office Changsha Planning & Design Institute further detailed the scheme, that was then executed by Philips Lighting. Liang Shuo, General Manager of Canton Tower Construction Co said during the inauguration event “The successful lighting design and the application of an all-LED scheme further strengthens the position of the Canton Tower as an urban landmark.”

The 640 meter tall tower – known locally as “the Slender Waist” due to its distinct shape is the world’s tallest stand-alone TV tower. With the tower itself designed to be an integral feature on the Guangzhou skyline, the lighting team worked closely with the Guangzhou city government to ensure that the Canton Tower adds to the city’s overall plan for the night view in a balanced manner.

The tower has attracted immense public attention in China and around the world since the ground breaking ceremony in 2005 and the formal completion in September 2010, and is an important focal point for Guangzhou as it is hosting the 16th Asian Games.
